I remember my mom could do some truly amazing things with food. With 9 kids, she was brilliant in how she made our favorites stretch so everyone could be well fed, but also not wasteful. One staple dinner was Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Man did I love it! But that alone wasn’t a complete meal. My mom would often add favorites to make a wholesome balanced meal. Like awesome hidden vegetable stuffed hamburgers.
Hidden Vegetable Stuffed Hamburgers
When it came to dinner this last weekend, I had the great idea to be a little sneaky and trick my kids to eat some vegetables. Just like my mom used to do! I knew I could get my kids to enjoy a Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. And they absolutely love to have hamburgers with it! So out came the trick to hide vegetables into their hamburgers!
Hidden Vegetable Stuffed Hamburgers
Ingredients
- 2 small potatoes or 1 medium/large
- 1-2 carrots
- 1 lb 93% LEAN hamburger
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Pepper
- 1 teaspoon Steak & Hamburger seasoning
Instructions
- Shred the potatoes and carrots.
- Combine hamburger, potato and carrot shreds into medium bowl
- Add seasonings
- kneed with hands until all are well combined and mixed.
- Form into large ball
- Portion off and create individual hamburger patties
- Grill to your preferred "done"
- serve with Kraft Macaroni and Cheese on the side.
Now when my mom made this she also added in some wheat. But I don’t remember how she did that. I hope to one day find that recipe. But until then, this will have to do.
Now while I couldn’t replicate my mom’s recipe exactly, I did however create something quite delicious that our whole family loved. Most miraculous is my 6 year old daughter who I have never been able to get to eat a hamburger! She ate it! And she liked it!
You want to make sure that the vegetables are shredded very fine. Like thin hash browns. You don’t want big chunks mixed in there otherwise the kids will notice. I got away with regular shredded. But you have really fussy and smart kids, you might want to go even smaller.
Then add the vegetables and hamburger into a bowl. Another special note, we only use 93% lean hamburger. It is less greasy so the vegetables don’t get soggy and more noticeable as you cook them.
Toss in the seasonings. Mix with your hands until it is all well combined. Form into hamburger patties. You will want to portion according to the recommended portions for each person.
Since I have small kids, I portioned out smaller patties for them. And then of course larger patties for the Husband and I.
Then grill the hamburgers. Since the weather turned cold, I was really glad I had this awesome stove top grill. It is awesome for grilling when the weather turns cold. It requires some liquid in the base of it as you grill. I drizzle a little apple juice into the base. It steams up and flavors the meat you are grilling and the apple juice makes it taste amazing!
Now if the weather was warm, I would just grill as normal on the outside grill. While these are grilling start cooking up the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese as instructed on the box!
When they are finished you can eat them alone on a plate with the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese like my kids like to do. Or you can use lettuce leafs in place of a bun like the husband likes to do. Or if you really want a bun, use the thin sliced whole grain buns like I did. They taste great but really keep it on the healthier side.
These hidden vegetable stuffed hamburgers are the perfect combination with our favorite Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Now we have a balanced meal with our traditional family favorites! What a great way to enjoy our favorite Kraft Mac & Cheese in a wholesome way!
We also love to get the kids involved when it comes to mealtime preparation. Kraft Mac & Cheese is a great way to get cooking with kids. Or if you have Star Wars fans like my family, you can create a full Star Wars Dinner! If you need a dish for a pot luck meal try a simple Kraft Macaroni and Cheese chicken casserole.

I just love taking some of my family favorites and incorporating them into a balanced meal. And speaking of wholesome, did you hear Original Kraft Macaroni & Cheese announced last April that it would be removing all artificial flavors, preservatives and dyes?
I heard about the announcement and I have been so excited for it! While our family specifically doesn’t have any allergens to food dyes, we do have some extended family that does. So this was fabulous news to us!
Original Kraft Mac & Cheese replaced artificial dyes (yellow 5 and 6) with paprika, annatto and turmeric to maintain signature color, and removed all artificial flavors and preservatives from the recipe.
Now what surprised me is that they released these boxes last December 2015! Did you notice? I didn’t! And I have been on the lookout for these new boxes! But SURPRISE! They did the world’s largest blind taste test!
They released the new product and didn’t tell anyone, to see if fans could really tell a difference. Well I sure didn’t notice. It still tastes just as amazing as ever! And that makes me very happy! We still have our favorite Kraft Macaroni and Cheese with the same great flavor and color! But now it’s naturally that amazing!
Now Kraft Mac & Cheese is out to thank fans who tried the new recipe and still loved every bite. The brand will be surprising non-noticing fans who ate the new recipe, with thank you gifts including free product, celebratory T-shirts, and even an oversized macaroni pillow!

What a great idea, wish I would have had it when our kids were younger. They loved Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. but for some reason they liked it better if I called it Cheesy pasta. Was still the same thing, just a change of names. Loved to read that they got rid of some of the yucky artificial stuff in it.
