How to Set The Holiday Atmosphere + Rustic Christmas Ornaments Tutorial

What is your favorite part of the Holidays? Is it the music? The holiday decorations? The Scents? For me, it’s all of it!

Nothing says Holidays like lights, hints of cinnamon and spruce and rustic Christmas ornaments that bring a surprising burst of joy!

For me, it’s all of it! Nothing says Holidays like lights, hints of cinnamon and spruce and rustic Christmas ornaments that bring a surprising burst of joy!

This is my favorite time of the year. Even though the weather is colder, I surround myself with everything that offers a beautiful Holiday Atmosphere.

Setting up a holiday atmosphere in your home is really simple to do. It requires just a few things from you and then you can enjoy the holiday atmosphere in your home all season long!

To set the Holiday Atmosphere in my home I do 4 things:

  1. Clean
  2. Bake goodies
  3. Use Glade® 3.4 oz. Small Jar Candles
  4. Set up the Holiday Decorations

Obviously, the cleaning is no fun. But really can you have a holiday atmosphere in a dirty home? No, no you can not.

Studies show that homes that are more cluttered actually affect our emotions, mental state, and happiness. So if you don’t have a clean home, you can’t have the calm of the holiday atmosphere.

So the first step is to clean up the area you want to exude the Holiday atmosphere. This means cleaning out the clutter. Even if it’s just boxing stuff up and hiding it in the garage until you know what to do with it. Yes, I’ve done this when the kids and husband won’t let me get rid of things, but we don’t have anywhere for them in the home.

Once you have the clutter out of the way, then dust, vacuum, and organize what is left.

You can use our tips on how to Clean a Bedroom to get it optimally clean and organized. The tips also help for cleaning up other rooms as well. And we have a free Printable that helps you get each room clean and ready for the holidays.

After our home is clean, I like to bake holiday goodies to help bring a Holiday atmosphere into our home. But I can’t bake goodies on a daily basis. That would be bad for my waistline. So I keep that to about once a week.

When I can’t bake to fill my home with hints of the Holiday spirit, I reach for my favorite Glade®  3.4 oz. Small Jar Candle like the Happy Glow™ Apple Cinnamon Scent and the Timeless Joy™ Woodland Spruce Scent.

These Glade®  Small Jar Candles freshen my home leaving the perfect holiday atmosphere in my home.

It’s the perfect way to greet guests, family or friends with hints of apple, cinnamon or spruce.

I like to set up a Glade® 3.4 oz. Small Jar Candle in my most frequented rooms like the entry way, sitting room, and living room. Then I light them about 5 minutes before guests are set to arrive and the room will be full of hints of spruce or apple cinnamon right as the guests arrive.

Lastly, I decorate for the holidays! This means

  • Setting up Christmas lights around our house.
  • Put out the Holiday decorations.
  • Set up the Christmas Tree.
  • Hang the ornaments.
  • Create Holiday crafts and homemade ornaments

Step 1:

Blow up the balloon to the size you want your rustic Christmas ornaments. You can make it as big as you want or as small as you want.

Wrap the balloon in plastic wrap. This step is important otherwise the balloon will stick to the jute string and make it difficult to remove at the end.

Tape the end of the jute string to the balloon. Then begin to wrap around the balloon in a random pattern. Keep the string tight as you go.

Once you have the ball how you want it, tape the end in place and trim excess.

Step 2:

Prepare the decoupage glue mixture 1 part water and 2 parts decoupage glue. You can then paint the ball with a paint brush. Or you can do it the easy way, and roll the twine ball into the mixture.

Make sure the entire ball is evenly coated in the decoupage glue mixture. Ensure that all of the Jute string has been treated with the decoupage glue mixture. This is what will stiffen it to keep it’s shape.

Hang the ornaments to dry for 24 Hours. You will want to add a layer of plastic wrap under the rustic Christmas ornaments as they dry to catch any of the decoupage that drips off.

Step 3:

Pop the balloon inside the twine ball. Gently remove the balloon and plastic wrap from the inside of the balloon.

Step 4:

This step is fully optional. But I love it because I love glittery Christmas ornaments! I love how the light reflects off the ornament and it looks magical.

Take the Twine ball outside into a well-ventilated area and spray with glitter dust. I use the same kind that I used when making Crochet Snowflake ornaments. I like it because it sprays the glitter in a very fine dust and you aren’t left with globs or big flecks of glitter. Just a very nice subtle touch.

Allow the glitter dust to dry. This usually takes about 1-2 hours to fully set.

Step 5:

Attach a twine loop at the top so you can hang it on the tree.

Using the hot glue attach the Holly Berry garnish and rustic brass bells at the base of the hanger.
