Time is flying by! The kids are already out for summer, and before you know it; it will be the 4th of July! So if your life gets hectic like mine and you find yourself faced with a holiday you weren’t quite ready for, you are going to love these easy 4th Of July Cupcakes with Sweetworks candy!

We always do fun baking for Independence Day! The kids just love all the patriotic red, white and blue food. But this summer has been extra hectic for us. We’ve done far too much traveling (not always fun travel), cleaning out the house, moving my office out to create a new nursery, and also getting ready for the new baby. The weeks are flying by way too quickly. I don’t always feel like I have a lot of time to do all the fun things anymore.

But at the same time I still want to do something fun with the kids for the 4th of July! And that is where these insanely easy 4th Of July Cupcakes come into play. You need very little supplies and they don’t take very much time at all! But the result is fun red, white and blue cupcakes your kids will love!

Supplies:

  • Cake mix box – pink or red (I’m using a strawberry flavor cause it is more summery)
  • Can of your favorite soda (I’m using Cream Soda)
  • Mix up some whipped frosting (use our recipe it is insanely easy and very light. And it’s not over sweet! People will actually eat the frosting instead of scrape it off!)
  • Patriotic cupcake wrappers
  • Patriotic Cupcake Toothpick sparklers (optional)
  • Patriotic colors and shaped candies from Sweetworks (We love the Stars and the Sixlets!)

First bake up our cupcakes. This is super easy, just combine the cake mix in a bowl with the soda. No other ingredients. Just mix and soda. Then bake as cupcakes according to the directions. Then set them aside to cool completely.

I personally love to bake them in my silicone baking cups, because then you can easily remove the cupcake and place it in a pretty cupcake wrapper. I’ve found too often if I bake my cupcakes in the pretty wrapper…well the wrapper doesn’t look so pretty afterwards. So if you want a pretty wrapper; bake the cupcakes in something else first and then transfer to the pretty wrapper.

Then mix up the frosting. And then frost each cupcake with a star tip to make a fun swirl design. You don’t need a lot of frosting on these like from the bakery. Besides, who really likes all that frosting anyway? Most people I know just scrape off half the frosting. So just enough to cover and make it look nice. But not to where there is more frosting than cupcake.

Then the fun part. Normally I would say you can divide up the frosting and color it. Then frost the cupcakes with all three colors at once. But, I was totally lazy today. (Didn’t get much sleep and this pregnancy is making me nauseous again). So I went with extra easy. I saw these Color mist cans at the store when I was picking up the cupcake liners; and well…figured why not give it a try. Seriously most genius way to color the frosting! It’s like spray painting! I can totally do that.

Just don’t go too heavy. A very light mist and it is perfect! I misted each cupcake with Blue and Red and then the white frosting showed through for the perfect patriotic effect.

Now take your favorite Sweetworks Candy and decorate the cupcakes. The kids love the Star Shapes. And they really look great on the cupcakes!

But seriously how can you go wrong using Red, White and Blue Sixlets? These are our favorite candy, so of course I had to use some of them! And then for some size variation we also used the pearl candies.

Lastly, if you want; you can add a fun cupcake toothpick sparkler to symbolize fireworks. And then serve!
