DIY Patriotic Patchwork Fabric Posy
With all the Patriotic Holidays the summer offers, I figured it was time to share yet another JadeLouise Designs craft secret! The secret on how to make fantastic boutique bows for the 4th of July or any other Patriotic holiday!
Today I’m sharing with you our super easy Patriotic Patchwork Posy hair bow tutorial that can also easily be made into a headband! This was always our top selling hair bow when we crafted hair bows for Etsy. Especially around the 4th of July. I don’t have a lot of time to craft and ship any more. So I wanted to share our secrets to make this fabric patriotic boutique hair bow.
Patriotic Patchwork Fabric Posy Boutique Bows Tutorial
To begin you need just a few supplies
- USA Patchwork Flag & Constitution fabric from Hobby Lobby. I hope you have a Hobby Lobby near you, as that is the only place I have been able to find this fabric. If not, pick your next favorite fabric.
- 1″ Flat Back rhinestone gem
- 2″ Felt Square
- Needle & Thread
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Backing of choice, alligator clip, broach pin or headband
I love this fabric from Hobby Lobby. It is a bit pricey per yard. It was around $8/ yard. But you don’t even need a full quarter of a yard to complete this craft.
Really you just need a few of the squares. Unless you want to make more than one. But thanks to the premeasured squares, it will be easy for you to figure out exactly how much of this fabric you would based on how many you want to make.
The first thing to do is cut the fabric. I adore this fabric because it is already premeasured into perfect squares. Simply cut the squares apart. You need three blue with star squares and three red stripes squares. This will create the patchwork posy of the base.
Then you need one section of one blue section and one red section still connected. Then cut that in half lengthwise. This will be stitched into the yo yo flower in the center.
Creating the Base of the Boutique bows
To create the base of the patchwork posy flower you will start by laying 1 blue square flat. Then lay the red square on top, at an angel where it looks like a diamond from your angle.
Take a red square and fold it in half into a triangle shape. Then fold the edges into the center creating a ruffle posy petal.
Lay it onto the base squares laying where it covers the blue tip poking out from the red fabric. Hand stitch into place.
Then fold the blue square the same manner, lay next to it and stitch into place. Repeat until you have two red squares and two blue squares folded and stitched into place. Be sure to alternate each fabric with each posy petal. You will have a total of 4 posy petals.
Now many people like to save this next part for last, but I prefer to do it at this stage so I don’t squish the posy once it is finished. Flip the base over. You will see the stitching on the back.
Now remember our Patriotic Wreath tutorial we made a few weeks ago? I ended up with some left over 2 ” felt squares and they are absolutely perfect to use for backing on boutique bows! So pick one of those up. Using a super hot glue, seal it onto the back of the posy to cover the stitching.
Why Super hot glue? Check out our Top 5 Craft tips to see why having super hot glue is best.
Crafting the yo yo boutique bows
Now we will craft the small Yo Yo posy center. Take the strip of the blue and red squares still attached. Cut in half lengthwise. Then fold one in half lengthwise. Use the needle and threat to weave in and out up the one side.
Then continue to weave the needle up and down through the edges, stitching them together all the way along the fabric ends.
Once you finish the length continue back up the opposite end. By this time your strip should start to pucker and pull together into a circle. And all the open seams should be “stitched” together. Not in a super tight stitch though.
Now pull on the string and push the fabric tighter towards the beginning knot. If you did it right, it will pull the stitched side into a tight circle and allowing the fabric to form a cute yo yo circle posy.
Stitch the two ends together tightly with a regular hand stitch so it won’t come apart.
Trim the excess thread. It is now complete. See how cute this little Yo yo Posy center is!
Assembling our Patchwork Posy Boutique bows.
Now it is time to put it all together. And it is really easy. Using the same hot glue place some in the center of the base posy. Add the Yo Yo Posy to the glue. The Yo Yo Posy should be centered in the base with the blue section aligned with a red posy petal from the base.
Now add a dap of hot glue to the center of the Yo Yo Posy and place the Rhinestone gem in the center of the Yo Yo posy.
Now it is assembled! See, I told you it was super easy. You can now add the backing of your choice. I have attached these Patriotic Patchwork Posy boutique bows to alligator clips for hair, a broach pin for shirts, coats and bags; and I have even attached it to headbands!
It is really universal to how you wear it. And we always get a lot of compliments on them. And like I told you at the beginning, these were my best selling Fabric Posy hair clip when I still crafted to sell.
Now you know the secret of how to make stunning Patriotic Patchwork Posy boutique bows! Once you get them complete, I want to see pictures! Be sure to post them for me on our Facebook Page wall! Or you can even email them to me! I can’t wait to see what you create!

**sheds tears for you***
I don’t have a Hobby Lobby near me either. And It drives me crazy!! My Sister does, so last time I was visiting, I stopped by and stocked up on this fabric specifically, because I can only get it there. I got 1/2 yard and it will make a LOT of these hair accessories.
So super CUTE! When my daughter was smaller, I used to make bows all the time. This is such a great idea and can be used with any fabric. Thanks for the tutorial!
YOu are welcome!!!
I even “borrow” my daughter’s hair bows I make to wear for myself. I don’t think you are ever too old to wear them. 🙂
how super cute is that!!! What a great job! Love how you put that on a headband!
So cute! I miss Hobby Lobby living in Canada. I went there all the time when we were in Oklahoma. If only I could make a quilt with a glue gun now!

In the beginning I thought it was going to look like a flower….then I saw the pinwheel and I feel in love. This would make a great broach for my grandma too!
Wow, that’s gorgeous! I wish my daughter was still young enough to wear that. It’s really cute!
That is just so creative! Wow…

This is a cute bow. I wish I had a little girl again, mine is 16. They have so many cute bows for them. I remember doing my daughter’s hair when she was younger, it was so much fun. Now she fixes her own hair. 🙂
Seriously adorable, and I love the vintage look of the material! Too bad I don’t have the time/skill to make something like this! Your daughter looks so cute wearing it! She’s sure blessed to have such a crafty mama!! (Pinned and +1d)
Happy 4th of July!

Many times sales are made of the same items you are wearing at the craft show.
You can use these pieces of bright handmade fashion jewellery
to brighten up a dull outfit or bring a little bit of colour to a
dull day. It can be expensive when you first get started
as you will need to go out and get all your tools to actually do the craft.
I love the rustic beauty of this headband!
It’s so cute! I will do for my daughter.
