Red White and Blue Patriotic Hair Clips for girls
With many patriotic holidays coming up, it’s time to break out the glue gun and get some patriotic fashion accessories. For my little girls I love to make patriotic hair clips. They are easy to toss together in about 5-10 minutes and have the perfect Red White and Blue look! Today’s special are Americana carnation hair clips.
Easy Patriotic Hair Clips
Begin with gathering your supplies. Right now you can find these awesome Red, White and Blue carnation bundles for $3 at Walmart. You can also probably find them at a craft store like Hobby Lobby.
- Red, White and Blue carnations silk flowers (I used 6 flowers and created 4 hair clips)
- Grosgrain lined Alligator Clip
- Button or bottle cap center accessory
- Glitter Dust (optional)
For an easy guide you can watch us create these patriotic hair clips in the video below. Or if you don’t like video, just keep ready for written instructions.

First you want to remove the carnation flowers from the stems. And take them part so you can access each individual petal layer.
Take a moment to lay out the carnation flowers in the pattern you would like your flower to have. My flower consisted of
- 2 red layers
- 1 blue layer
- 2 white layers
- 1 red layer
- 1 blue layer
- 1 white layer
- 1 red layer
- 1 blue layer
You will notice that some of the petal layers are smaller than the others. These smaller layers are the ones I like to use at the end.
I also like to alternate the petals. You will notice as you lay them down, there are open spaces between each petal. For the next layer I like to lay it so that the 2nd layer lays across the gap of petals from the layer before.
Also take special note to keep the center hole lined up for all layers.
Once you have a layout of petals that you like, then gently flip the flower over. Begin by taking each layer one at a time and re-flip it back over and glue together.
You will place a small amount of hot glue in the center of each petal layer. Lay the next layer on top. Pat down to ensure a solid connection between the flower and glue.
Continue this process until all the flower layers are glued together.
At this time you have the option of adding glitter. I love glitter. And it gives a fun look to Patriotic Hair clips. It’s almost as if the fireworks are going off in the flower itself!
Take the glitter dust and lightly spray the fabric flower (make sure to do this outside).
Allow to dry 2-3 minutes before moving on.
Then take your options for the center adornment. I had some bottle cap butterflies left over from when I ran a craft store. But you can find all kinds of Patriotic Bottle caps on Etsy. I also picked up two 1 inch buttons at Walmart for the center for the other 2 flowers.
Turn the button over and apply a thick layer of hot glue to the back. Then place in the center of the flower. Press firmly to ensure it adheres. If you are using the Bottle cap do the same. A large amount of hot glue on the back then place in the center of the flower. Press Firmly.
Be careful to not burn yourself. It hurts. Just saying. 😉 Not that I would know of such things right? *Quickly hides blistered fingers behind my back.*
Once the hot glue cools you can move onto the final step. Attach it to the lined alligator hair clip. Place a little hot glue onto the top of the hair clip and press to the back of the flower. Make sure any patterns in the flower are facing the right way for when the hair clip will be added to the hair.
Allow to cool.
And now you are done! You have a boutique style Americana hair clip that is perfect for all your patriotic festivities!
And for our sweet Canadian friends, do the same thing, just remove the blue from the style. And add the signature Maple Leaf decoration in the center of the flower!
For more fun instead of attaching hair clips, you can attach brooch pins the same way for a bag pin, or pin on your shirt!
Attach these flowers to a headband for older girls! Or a baby headband for infants!
There are a lot of ways you can use these patriotic flowers. They make the cutest patriotic hair clips. Boutique style patriotic hair clips but at a price you can afford!
It only takes about 5-10 minutes to create multiple patriotic hair clips. Get your friends together and have a girl crafting party and make all your little girls patriotic hair clips!
