School is here! And that means when that big yellow bus appears you will have ravenous kids entering your home looking for a tasty and satisfying snack! Mostly my kids just like something to munch on while they are working on homework or filling me in on the day’s activities.
So that is why I like to have an easy snack mix available like Goldfish® crackers Puppy Chow Mix that they can dish up easily and pair with fresh fruit for a great afterschool snack.
Cheesy Puppy Chow Mix
Now, you may be thinking,
“What? Goldfish crackers in Puppy Chow? Are you crazy?”
But seriously it is delicious.
Last year, near the “BIG GAME” we dipped Goldfish crackers in chocolate. And it was magical! Most people wouldn’t think about mixing cheddar Goldfish crackers with chocolate. But believe you me, it is AMAZING! You have to try it!
So with the kids back to school, I figured I needed to get an easy snack mix ready for them. So thinking along the same line of chocolate and Goldfish crackers, add in another favorite of peanut butter and I thought Puppy Chow!
My kids beg for puppy chow all the time. But I rarely have all the ingredients on hand. But you know what I DO always have on hand? Goldfish crackers.
We always have Goldfish crackers on hand, because it is Miss Jade’s favorite sensory snack! We use them to help with math lessons, counting, sorting, and many other fun activities.
And they pack that cheesy crunch that is so very satisfying, especially to kids with Sensory Processing Disorder!
So with a little altering of the traditional recipe, we have a unique after-school snack that kids absolutely love!
Plus you can put it into a fun snack bag and send it to school as a lunchbox treat! Make it extra fun in a back to school bag!

A great thing about this recipe is that it is so simple, even the kids can help you make it!
It’s a fun activity to do together one day, while they tell you all about their day at school.
Gather up the ingredients so that it is easy for the kids to help. Then let them do the rest!
Combine the Goldfish crackers and coconut into a bowl and set aside.
Combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter in a microwaveable bowl. Microwave 1 minute.
Stir until smooth.
Return to the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove. And be careful the bowl may be a little warm.
Pour the chocolate mixture on the Goldfish crackers and coconut.
Now fold the mixture together until the Goldfish crackers are well coated.
If you have a 2-gallon resealable bag then you can do this next step in one bag. If you only have 1-gallon bags like I did, you will need to split it in half.
Split the Goldfish mixture in half into 2 separate zip seal bags. Add half of the powdered sugar to each bag. Seal and begin to shake.
Shake until all the Goldfish crackers are coated and no longer sticky.
Pour out onto a parchment lined cookie sheet.
Spread it out and allow to cool for a minute.
Now you can portion it up into individual servings for each kid. I love using muffin/cupcake liners. They give just enough sweet puppy chow mix portions.
Make sure after you are done that you portion it out into airtight containers for storage. Otherwise, it will become soft and loses its crunch which is half the fun!
In an airtight container, it could last as long as 1 week. You can even store it in the refrigerator to make it last even longer.
Now pair our fun Goldfish crackers puppy chow mix with some fresh produce and you have an awesome afterschool snack to please the rambunctious rascals!
And honestly what is better than peanut butter, chocolate, and cheese flavors than adding a banana?
OK, so apples or other fruits would pair excellently as well. But my daughter is in a stage of wanting bananas. Plus those are simple to add to a lunch box. No cutting, washing or prepping required.
The other great thing is that everything you need can be purchased at Walmart during your regular shopping trip! The Goldfish crackers are in the cracker aisle. Then stop by the produce section to get some tasty fruit pairings.
You can also Save $1.00 on any ONE (1) Bolthouse Farms® 10 oz. Baby Carrots or Bolthouse Farms(® 11 oz. juice when you buy any ONE (1) Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers 30 oz. or larger. And you are going to want the large cartons for this recipe! It makes a lot. But that just means you have after school snacks for the full week!
And don’t forget those baby carrots or Bolthouse Farms(® 11 oz. juice because they would also go great with this puppy chow mix recipe!
