Remember last week, I talked about the issues we had with our garden bed being overgrown with weeds? I shared the first 2 steps to getting a weed free garden bed. Well we are going to finish up that project today, by showing you an effective DIY Weed Barrier project.
DIY Weed Barrier
If you haven’t visited our last post, make sure you stop over there so you can see the first 2 steps to this project. They are crucial! Without doing them first, your weed barrier will not be effective!
And remember, it will be easier if you turn this project into a family activity. Get everyone involved. It will make an overwhelming project become simpler and take a lot less time! Now after you have completed step 1 & 2 of weeding and laying the weed barrier fabric, it is time to move onto step 3!
Step 3: Mulch! The final step is adding mulch. You can’t just leave the weed barrier fabric exposed. It will easily rip, or the wind will blow it away. It does need something on top. Plus it doesn’t look that beautiful on it’s own. Add 3 inches deep of quality mulch on top of the weed barrier fabric. This will help keep the weed barrier fabric in place.
It will also dramatically improve the look of your flower bed. It will also help to reduce weeds and keep moisture locked into the soil making your plants healthier and you won’t need to water as often! And that is it! Your DIY Weed Barrier Project is now complete! What you can expect at the end will include
- Minimal weeding (it won’t keep 100% of weeds away but it will dramatically reduce the amount of weeds you will face)
- A beautiful and well maintained flower/garden bed with minimal effort
- More efficient watering
The one down side to this project is that you will most likely be in some post-DIY project pain. I mean that is a lot of back bending work!
So you will definitely want to have some Fast Acting Advil® on hand for when you are done! I can’t tell you how stiff and sore the husband was as he was doing most of the heavy lifting! He was grateful for some pain relief!
