I have a little princess on my hands! Miss Jade just loves being a princess. And she knows she is OUR little princess. And to add to the fun, often times when I get her up in the morning, she comes out of her room already dressed for the day in her Princess costume; Tiara and all.

This is a new stage  of imagination play where she loves to dress up and be a princess for the day. Part of the fun is incorporating things into her day that help her with her imagination play and role playing therapies. It encourages her speech development and cognitive process, as her therapists taught us.

So if I can give her activities throughout the day that play into her experience of being a princess for the day, then that is highly encouraged by her therapists. Not to mention it is just plain fun and a great way to interact in her daily play.

This also means turning a boring old snack time into something fun that goes along with her daily activities. Like using her favorite Goldfish crackers in her activities. Sometimes it is as simple as letting her munch on them while she is doing her daily coloring. (She LOVES to color).

And sometimes that means doing something a little extra special. Like how I made her this adorable Snack time Butterfly Princess Wand. Sure, not all princesses have wands. But MY little princess does! Because some days she is a fairy princess. And other days she is a magical princess. She needs a wand. And this is so simple and something that can be reused day after day!

Not to mention it uses her favorite Goldfish crackers, that now come in  fun princess packaging to complete the effect!

To begin we start with the wand. Take one of the 5/8″ ribbons and heat seal the end so it doesn’t fray. Then with a dab of hot glue attach it to the top of the dowel. Then slowly and tightly wrap it around in a spiral down the dowel.

Use a dab of hot glue every few turns to make sure the ribbon stays in place. At the end trim off the ribbon, heat seal and then hot glue the end to the bottom of the dowel.

Next, take the next color of 5/8″ and follow the same steps. Slightly overlap the first color, and simply fill in the rest of the dowel with the 2nd color of ribbon. Again trim the end, heat seal and hot glue to the end of the dowel.

Now take the 1/4″ accent ribbon. Heat seal and begin at the top of the dowel and wrap it around adding accent to the design of the wand. Again making sure to hot glue into place, heat seal the end and glue at the bottom.

Then we make the streamers for the wand by taking all three of the ribbons and cutting off a length of your choice. Heat seal both ends again. The last thing you want is fraying ribbon. Don’t know about heat sealing ribbon? We talk about it in our 5 craft tips to make crafting easier. I give tips on how to heat seal ribbon.

Then hot glue one end of each ribbon into place on the top of the dowel, allowing the ribbon to cascade down from the top. You can add these in any order you want, but I wanted to alternate the colors to give it texture.

Finally we take the accent flower and hot glue it into place on the top of the dowel. This will hide the odd ends of the ribbons but also give a cute accent to the wand.

Creating the Goldfish crackers Butterfly

Now the actual wand is finished. And this is what it will look like when you don’t have the snack time Butterfly attachment.

Next we move onto creating the Goldfish crackers snack time butterfly. This will be attached to the wand each day. And can easily be removed when it’s time for snacks. And because we attach everything it will be reusable and you don’t have to make a new one each time! Just refill the snacks!

Take one of the 3/8″ ribbons from before (your choice which color) measure the length of the clothespin, slightly overlapping the top and bottom. Trim and heat seal the ribbon. And then hot glue the ribbon into place on the top of the clothespin, lapping over the open bit of the clothespin to be hot glued down into place. And again over the bottom end of the clothespin.

Next hot glue the googly eyes into place.

Now that we are finished with the hot glue, you can enlist the help of your child to prepare the butterfly snacks to be attached to the wand! Have them count out the grapes and the Goldfish crackers to be placed into the zip seal bags.

You will want about 10 grapes and the usual serving size of the Goldfish Princess crackers.

Place these into the snack sized zip seal bag. Making certain to keep the grapes and the Goldfish crackers separated on their own ends.

Pinch the center to keep the snacks apart and then insert it into the mouth of the clothespin.

Cut the pipe cleaner in half and fold into the look of an antenna. Then insert into the mouth of the clothespin.

Use tape to attach the String cheese to the underside of the butterfly. Be sure to attach the round side to the butterfly so it will lay correctly on the wand.

Now that your butterfly snack bags are ready it is time to attach them to the wand to complete the Goldfish crackers snack time Butterfly Princess Wand!

You can do this by using either another pipe cleaner or more ribbon. Your choice. Place the butterfly on the wand where you want it to be. Then wrap the ribbon or pipe cleaner around the underside of the butterfly and the wand. At the end twist the pipe cleaner so it won’t unwind. Or tie the ribbon into a bow.
