Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

Last week I shared a great recipe that spoils your family with our favorite Coconut Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies. But, not everyone in the family can enjoy those! If you have dogs you know darn well they can’t partake in that treat!

CHOCOLATE IS OH SO VERY BAD FOR DOGS!!!!!!

So today I’m going to show you how you can make it up to your dog and get him some extra spoiling.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

When it comes to our pets we always want the best. And because of our obsession with wanting the best, we have caused a little problem in our house. We have no way to store all of our pet supplies!

We have multiple leashes for sweet Odin based on how we want to go walking. We also have multiple grooming tools. And a LOT of toys!

And then there are the treats! When it comes to treats for Odin we are picky. We want him to have the best ingredients while still having a lot of flavors.

For us, the treats we pick must include

    • Real U.S. farm-raised beef or chicken is always the #1 ingredient
    • No artificial flavors or meat by-products
    • No corn or wheat

We have been enjoying Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® dog and cat food because it follows those guidelines. So when I noticed they just launched a dog treats line, we were very excited! And yes, they meet all of our requirements!

These Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Dog Treats are safely USA cooked with the world’s best ingredients.

Now while we all love to spoil our pets, it is important to remember to treat our pets responsibly!

Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Treats are intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Please watch your dog to ensure Nutrish treats are thoroughly chewed before swallowing. Break into small pieces for smaller dogs.

While we love to spoil Odin all the time, we choose to spoil him with a variety of rewards. From extra cuddling time, long walks outdoors, an extra long brushing, playing tug with his rope, or throwing the ball for him to chase.

We treat Odin with the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Treats as an extra special treat right before bedtime.

He also enjoys them as a treat right before we leave to run errands or for church. Basically any time he will be required to hang out in his kennel for a few hours.

There are five flavors to choose from:

    • Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Deli Cuts
    • Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Meatloaf Morsels
    • Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Pawsta
    • Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Savory Roasters
    • Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Burger Bites

I had to get all five flavors so Odin could try them all. Plus he loves variety. He thrives on variety! So we can spoil him even more by offering him a new flavor each day of the work week!

Now, if you aren’t careful all these pet supplies and dog treats can get lost in the shuffle! And in fact, in our house, they did!

We didn’t have a way to organize our pet supplies. And it’s been driving me crazy!

We have been storing everything in random boxes on top of Odin’s Kennel. I mean look at that mess!

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

That’s not really fun for him. And it makes our house look bad. No matter what, that corner of the room always looks a disaster! And we can’t find anything when we need it!

But we don’t want to get rid of everything because we love to spoil our sweet Odin. So that means I need to organize it.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

I’m really big into taking the cheap way to projects. Keep the cost low but have amazing results.

So I went thrift shopping. My original idea was to find some awesome shelving or cabinets that I make over. Well, sadly our thrift stores selections were pretty slim. Nothing that would work in the space that still had sturdy materials to work with.

So I went to plan B. I’d make the shelves.

But since I’m really not handy with a hammer or nails, I did a little cheating. I picked up some already built crates to give an easy makeover. And then I created crate shelves for organizing pet supplies!

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet SuppliesAnd it’s so easy and can be done all in a single day! This way you can still spoil your sweet pup with a variety of Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® treats but also spoil yourself by keeping your pet supplies organized and looking nice.

    DIY Crate Shelves

As I said, these crate shelves can be done and be hanging in your house in less than a day! Plus they are very functional and have a hint of the rustic look to them.

    Crate Shelves Supplies:

Ensure that your crate is sturdy and stable. Not all of them are the same. I found many with cracked wood or weak corners. Get the sturdy ones.

I originally planned to spray paint, but I decided against it because:

    1. You can’t do it inside because there isn’t enough ventilation.
    2. It’s been below 20 degrees outside all month.
    3. Spray paint doesn’t work as well in freezing temperatures.
    4. Lastly, it takes longer to dry.

So I went with my trusty Chalk paint. I love chalk paint. I used it in our Travel LEGO table, the Dresser Makeover, Kids Treasure Box, and even a nightstand makeover! I love chalk paint because:

    1. It doesn’t have any fumes to worry about.
    2. You can paint inside where it is warm.
    3. It’s easy to wash up with just gentle soap and water.
    4. It washes out of clothes if you happen to get some on you.
    5. It dries FAST. Like 15 minutes and you are ready for the next step.

To create these crate shelves for organizing pet supplies, simply spread out the plastic on a flat surface.

    Place the crate on top.

Shake up your chalk paint to ensure it is mixed well. You want to use a stiff bristle brush for more precision as you paint. It will make it go much faster.

    Begin painting your crates.

If you are going with an actual color, you can do the first coat with white, wait 15 minutes for it to dry and then follow up with a 2nd coat in the color of your choice. That will make the color stand out stronger.

I am trying to brighten up this dark corner so I stayed with white.

After the paint dried I checked for spots that needed additional coats. I left some spots a little lighter on paint on purpose for a rustic farmhouse look.

After the paint has fully dried you move onto waxing.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

Dab just a small amount on the wax brush and brush across the crate. The wax spreads and you don’t want a thick coat. So keep brushing to spread it around.

The wax helps to seal the paint and protect the crate shelves from wear and tear and keeps the paint looking nice.

Once you have waxed the crates allow them to sit for at least 30 minutes for the wax to absorb.

Attach the brackets to the crates.

Now hang the crate shelves on the wall!

If you have a narrow wall, You can stack then one above the other. If you have a little wider wall, you can go side by side like I did!

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

Once the crate shelves are hanging on the wall, you can begin to organize your pet supplies and filling them up!

I used the curling design of the shelf brackets on one crate shelf to hang the leashes.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

I added a curtain rod through the shelf bracket on the first crate shelf and added hanging tubs.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

In these, I organized grooming brushes in one, chew bones in another, and lastly the poop bags and small miscellaneous items in the 3rd.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

For the shelves, I added a small basket to hold all of Odin’s grooming supplies and his toys. He has a lot of toys! This way it keeps them from scattering everywhere. And keeps his balls from rolling off the shelf!

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

Larger items I placed on top of the crate shelves.

In the other crate shelf, I store the dog treats! I keep his dental dog bones in his valentine’s box for dogs. This keeps them airtight and fresh.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

Then I can store all the varieties of our Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Dog Treats. They fit perfectly in the crate shelves. And it is easy to cycle through them.

This way I can always find what I need when I need it!

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

Now Odin’s kennel is cleared off. And that corner of the house looks much nicer and brighter.

I get to spoil myself and spoil our Odin! He seems to really like the cleaner corner too.

Easy DIY Crate Shelves for Organizing Pet Supplies

If you don’t have pets you can use the crate shelves for all kinds of storage needs from kids toys, books, knick knacks, or even holding fresh towels in the bathroom! The options are endless!

This storage system for dog items is really nice. I love how it lifts everything off the crate and keeps it out of kid and dog access. #client
