Do you hate bedtime battles as much as I do? You will love these easy ideas on how to stop toddler bedtime battles! An Easy 5 Step Toddler Bedtime Routine your kids will love! And it will get them to sleep fast.
Our life has been crazy the last few weeks. Summer vacation ended, the kids went back to school, we’ve had the flu cycling through our family, and we’ve had a few last minute trips to visit family in between all of that.
When life is thrown upside down, it helps to have a routine that you can take with you on the go to help put a little order back into your child’s life.
And the flu has definitely thrown a stumbling block into our lives. This is the first time in YEARS anyone in our house has gotten the flu. And it has been nasty. So this mom was exhausted after tending to everyone else. So it really shouldn’t be a surprise when the flu hit me.
All I wanted to do was curl up and hide. But as you well know, Moms don’t get that luxury.
So I went to Walgreens to get some things to make our recovery go smoother. Our Walgreens is always well stocked of the items I’m looking for. No empty shelves here. I first experienced Walgreens years ago when my eye doctor recommended an eye drop for an allergic reaction my eyes were having. Walgreens was the only place that carried it.
And ever since then, I’ve been hooked! It’s still the only place I can find my eye drops. And they never have empty shelves.
Not to mention the employees are always very helpful! If I can’t find something, someone is always available to help. What I really love is the Pharmacist is always available to answer questions.
Once I went looking for allergy medication for my kids and was confused by all the different brands. How do I know which one is the most effective? The pharmacist came out from behind the counter and talked to me about each one individually so I knew which one to pick for my kids. And every time I go back, he’s always available to help me with questions, even about OTC medications and that help get us feeling better faster after this flu.
Every season, I have to stop in and check out the fun seasonal decor. The prices are much more reasonable than other stores, and the quality is better. Not to mention I also get to earn rewards points for anything I buy.
They always carry exactly what I’m looking for and there are always great ways to save with points, rewards, and digital coupons.
And I can never resist the toy and seasonal aisle! There is always something cool on sale.
While checking out all the sales at Walgreens, I stumbled upon a beautiful sight!

How to stop Toddler Bedtime Battles
All moms can get exhausted by the end of the day. And when you are exhausted, you have even less patience for the bedtime battles.
But did you know something as easy as a simple toddler bedtime routine can help stop toddler bedtime battles?
If you have a bedtime routine, it is easier to help calm a child and get them physically and mentally ready for bedtime.
See, I have an extremely energetic toddler that puts to shame that battery brand bunny that keeps going and going and going.
See there is just no stopping this child! She’s always a spitfire ball of energy.
Our Easy bedtime routine helps her calm down so she is ready to go to bed easily without the toddler bedtime battles.
Which is a must, because when you are sick, you don’t have the energy to have a bedtime battle.
Plus it allows special bonding time, even though this mom is worn out and tired. And it’s something I can still usually do even when I’m down sick….well, usually.
Sometimes the husband has to take over for me. But I can still be part of at least some of it, even when sick.
Easy Toddler bedtime routine to Stop Bedtime Battles
Not only does a bedtime routine help a toddler mentally prepare for bed, it is also a great opportunity to spend quality bonding time together, in simple activities.
And best of all, it’s not really hard. It’s fairly quite easy and makes a big difference.
Have a set Time for your Toddler’s Bedtime Routine
This first step is a no-brainer. Even the word routine means there is consistency, “a fixed program.”
Having the same bedtime for your toddler every day helps them to set their internal clock. And they are more likely to be ready to wind down.
If you do bedtime at the same time every day, they know what to expect and it decreases the tendency for toddler bedtime battles.
We currently put our toddler to bed around 6:30-7 pm. So in order for this to happen, we begin the bedtime routine about 30 minutes prior. And then she is ready to sleep when the toddler bedtime routine is complete.
Begin with Bathtime
Bathtime is a great way to help get your toddler ready for bed. Not only are you cleaning them up from a hard day at play, but it also helps them work out extra energy and calms them.
Using bathtime products that are gentle on their skin and senses is a must. You don’t want to be stimulating them or cause skin irritation that will just make them grumpy.
I add a few squirts of the JOHNSON’S® Baby Bedtime Bath into the tub water. It has a soothing scent and offers gentle bubbles that all toddlers love.
Use this time to engage with your toddler.
One of our favorite bathtime activities is to play with Foam letters and numbers. It is a fun way to help teach our little Rose letters, colors, numbers and counting.
She’s gotten so good, that now we are having her pick two letters and we talk about the sounds they make alone and what they make when put together.
She loves this activity. It engages her mind, senses, and offers a great bonding experience.
Then we let our little Rose have some free play time in the tub to just be creative. This helps to work out extra energy she may have.
She loves to take the bubbles from the bathtub and rub them around her body as she sings her little made up song
“Wash my body, wash my body, washy, washy, washy.”
When bathtime is complete, I love to use the JOHNSON’S® COTTONTOUCH™ Newborn Wash & Shampoo to finish washing up.
While all the other JOHNSON’S® products are reformulated, the JOHNSON’S® COTTONTOUCH™ Newborn Wash & Shampoo is completely all new!
It is gentle on the skin and is specially formulated to be light and gentle on a newborn baby’s sensitive skin. And it rinses clean away without residue.
Simple Baby Massage
After a bathtime, we move onto a fun bonding activity. A gentle baby massage with the JOHNSON’S® Baby Bedtime Lotion. The fragrance helps to calm, and the movements of a message are very soothing, calming and brings about a special bonding experience.
This baby massage is especially helpful if your child has been sick or is achy.
Add a little JOHNSON’S® Baby Bedtime Lotion to your hands and gently massage it onto your toddler’s chest, legs, arms, hands, feet, and back.
Kids with Sensory Processing Disorder tend to really enjoy this as it offers the perfect sensory touch to help soothe and calm.
After massaging their body, finish up with a gentle head massage.
When our babies were really little we would use a little JOHNSON’S® Baby Bedtime Lotion with a soft bristle brush to massage their head and help with cradle cap.
Now that our toddler is older and has hair, we use the JOHNSON’S® Baby No More Tangles Detangling Spray.
Spritz it into the hair and then brush their hair in smooth, soothing strokes. It helps to remove tangles, keeps hair soft, and allows for the brush to move smoothly through the hair to give the best massage without jerks of tangles getting in the way.
Cuddle time
Cuddle time is one step our kids never let us forget. We take about 5-10 minutes to just cuddle them either in their bed or in our big bed.
This is the perfect time to read their favorite stories, or talk, or even sing together.
Our little Rose insists on having a story, AND music time together.
After we read a small book together, I then play my ukulele and sing to her.
And sometimes she wants to be involved in playing the ukulele.
Doing this while cuddled together helps to further calm and prepare your toddler for going to bed easily which helps stop toddler bedtime battles.
But it also offers those tender moments where cherished memories are created.
Give some love
Now it’s time to tuck them into bed. But don’t forget the most important step! Giving love.
EVERY NIGHT, we give hugs and kisses as we tuck the kids into bed. (Sometimes kisses get skipped when someone is sick). Then we wish them goodnight, turn off the light and shut the door.
Our toddler curls up into her blanket and doesn’t get out of her bed at all!
She will sometimes sing to herself for a few minutes. But usually, she goes right to sleep.
How’s that for stopping Toddler Bedtime Battles? Pretty simple right?
This has been the easiest transition to a toddler bed out of all our children. I’ve actually been really shocked by how easy it has been.
But by the time we are done with our easy toddler bedtime routine, she is completely ready to go to sleep. It has stopped toddler bedtime battles!
