Today’s Natural makeup tutorial is brought to you courtesy of SheSpeaks and @LOrealParisUSA because they supplied me with a complimentary Magic Nude Liquid powder foundation in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Just because summer is on it’s way out, doesn’t mean that the natural look in makeup is leaving! In fact it is bigger than ever! Looking natural is very “in” right now. Thank goodness for me! I’m not big on wearing a lot of makeup! Mostly that’s because the natives don’t always afford me a lot of time to get ready. Oh, I can get dolled up and plaster it on if there is an elegant event. But for the most part I like to have a very natural look.
That’s why I use a lot of natural makeup. Meaning makeup that is meant to leave me looking natural. And especially as a busy mom. I don’t often have a lot of time to do all that fancy makeup to begin with. So I’m going to show you how to have a great natural look in less than 15 minutes; including the usual morning interruptions that suddenly transpire the moment Mom tries to take time to prepare herself for the day.
Natural Makeup Tutorial
First step is to start with a clean and hydrated face. Make sure all old makeup is washed off. Your face has been moisturized and is prepped. If you happen to have a Skin primer that is a great foundation to build on. It will keep your makeup from wearing off as quickly throughout the day. Because we all know as a busy mom, we only get one shot at this. What? Kids allow you to return for a touch up later in the day? Where does that happen? Not in my house.
For my natural look I like a light foundation. Liquid foundations are often a lot easier to apply and go faster. When the natives are unsupervised…trust me…faster is better. But then there is the issue of having the finished powdered look that a powder foundation offers. I love using the brand new L’Oréal Paris Magic Nude foundation.
The new liquid-powder formula glides on and transforms on contact to a fresh, powder-like finish for a look that’s flawless, yet undetectable. The lightweight foundation with SPF 18 will make you feel like you aren’t wearing makeup at all! No really! Other than having confidence that my skin looks great, I can’t feel the foundation at all. It comes in 12 shades and is available at mass food and drug retailers nationwide.
You always want to shake well before applying. By this time you notice the toddler enter the bathroom with you. At present she is merely watching you, so you feel safe to proceed. For best results, pour just a few drops onto fingers and apply directly onto skin. It’s actually the first liquid foundation that I know of that is not recommended for use with a sponge or brush. So really it is really easy!
Apply a thin layer over your entire face. Then Blend. We are now about 1.5-2 minutes into the procedure. At this point you will need to take a moment and to pacify the toddler pulling on your arm saying “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” So you pull out a soft sponge, pretend to apply the foundation to the sponge and then apply the sponge to your child’s face. Making her feel like she is getting “pretty” like mommy. Then you turn back to prepping yourself.
Next are the eyes. Again for a natural look in under 15 minutes I go simple. Today I’m using my favorite natural mineral eye shadow duo from Mia Mariu. But really you just need two-three shades of natural browns. Apply the medium brown to the eye lids. The darker brown to the crease and along the eyelash line where you would normally apply eye liner. Don’t apply across the entire lid. Only the outer edge of each eye. If you happen to have a third lighter neutral color you can apply that along the top of your eye directly below the eyebrow. Then blend all the eye shadows together.
You now notice the toddler sticking her fingers into the eye shadow and brushing them across her face and eyes. With a deep breath you move the eye shadow out of the child’s reach, which you know you should have done in the first place. But you are a mom. You’re running late. You forgot. It’s normal. With a gentle wash cloth you wash the makeup off the toddler. With a gentle kiss you say, “mommy needs to get ready now. Go play with your doll”. And you return to finishing your rushed natural makeup look. You are now 7 minutes into the morning ritual.
Next comes the mascara. Again I love primer, so I use the newest Mary Kay lash Primer followed by the Mary Kay Lash Love Lengthening mascara in black. As you finish off your last eyelash you notice movement out of the corner of your eye. How in the world did you not notice the return of the toddler?
Upon closer inspection you realize she is mimicking your mascara application with her hair brush a mere millimeter away from poking out her eye with the bristles. At this time, you now call for reinforcements. The 9 year old arrives with an exasperated “What?”. After a few moments of bartering you convince him to entertain the toddler for a brief moment while you finish. So as you hear the toddlers tantrums begin, The 9 year old turn into a bossy oldest child, the yelling back and forth, you proceed to quickly finish the last two steps at an impressive 10 minutes into the routine.
Apply a natural eyebrow pencil to your eyebrows, to help draw attention to your eyes. I use the Natural blonde from Beautique. I have finally found an eye brow pencil that actually matches my eyebrows. I cannot remember where I purchased it from. I may be in trouble if I can’t remember in the next few weeks as I’m almost out. You take a moment to look yourself over to make sure all is blended and think, “oh, I forgot to replace (Insert the oldest piece of makeup you need to replace here). But wait..you hear the screams of the toddler saying “NO!” Enough reminiscing you must hurry on. And you forget to write down that you need to replace…well…whatever it was you were getting low on.
For the finishing touch, the lips. Again you can do a lot of different options for the lips. But by this time, you are running close to out of time. The toddler is screaming, the 9 year old is yelling and who knows what happened to the 8 year old, dog or cat. You feel a cold breeze go through the room and wonder “is the front door open again?” So when running low on time you reach for a favorite lip gloss.
Today I’m sporting the RIMMEL Stay Glossy “Stay My Rose”. With a quick application you are set and off to play referee. With mommy out of the bathroom it is as though the waters of the Red Sea have parted and all is well in Zion! The fighting and screaming immediately resolves. The 8 year old, dog and cat all magically reappear and the cold draft is no more. The toddler is happy and content and the 9 year old is no longer instigating fights.
My entire look in less than 15 minutes! But you know…without kids it could actually be closer to 8 minutes. But we’re moms. This is the life. And even on our bad days, we still know this is our true calling. And we wouldn’t trade it for the world. So we adapt and opt for a natural makeup look most of the time. We try to convince ourselves this is truly what we want. When actually, it’s all the natives will allow us to do. But in reality, we don’t mind the natural makeup look. And even when the kids do behave; we find ourselves opting for a natural makeup look so we can spend more time with them.
The true key to sporting a great natural makeup look and juggling kids at the same time is all with the foundation. A lot of foundations leave flakes or streaks or settle into the wrinkles that we are in denial of having. Or they leave a caked on look that completely screams “fake”. When you want a natural look you want something that will even skin tone, blend but not look like you are wearing makeup! And that is why I love the L’Oréal Paris Magic Nude Liquid Powder Makeup when I am going for a natural makeup look.
