Miss Jade just started kindergarten this year. It is a milestone I have been very scared about because of her learning disabilities. But so far she is loving Kindergarten and her teacher. The stress comes in getting her to learn all that is required of kindergarten students. She has learning challenges, Sensory Processing Disorder and a very overwhelming communication barrier because of her developmental delays. Because of this, it makes learning a challenge. What a normal student can pick up and learn usually takes Miss Jade 2-5 times longer.

I worry about the challenges Miss Jade faces, so I want to help her all I can at home. But we can’t just sit and do practice sheets all the time. She gets bored. And we both get frustrated when she isn’t grasping the concept. For us the best way to help Miss Jade learn is by using educational games.

These games help Jade learn, while at the same time she thinks she is playing a game. It helps me not feel as worried, because Jade is getting extra exposure to the lessons she is learning in school, but at home. And in a way that she is receptive to.

Especially when these games involve electronics. Miss Jade absolutely loves electronics. So you can bet that she is over the moon excited about our newest collection of LeapFrog learning games!

Our games arrived just in time for Miss Jade’s 6th birthday! They really made her day! She got to enjoy three new LeapFrog learning games to help her this month!

Word Whammer LeapFrog Learning game.

Word Whammer is a simple hand held game that features 3 mini games. Each game focuses on learning letters and combining letters to create words. She learns to recognize the letters, their sounds and how ot combine them to create simple sight words she is required to know for Kindergarten.

The great thing about Word Whammer is that the games have 5 learning levels, so it can grow with Miss Jade as she becomes more proficient with each game. This will help keep her entertained longer, and the game will continue to be a favorite for months to come. And not just a “I played for a week, completed the levels and now I’m bored”.

I love how Word Whammer is ergonomically designed for little hands. It fits perfectly in Miss Jade’s hands and makes playing fun. At first we immediately thought of the old game from my childhood “Bop it!” because of the design. And in fact it has a similarity in that you can twist the handle and push it in. This is how you direct the games. But that is about where the similarity ends.

You can push in the handle to black off a rocket into letters and then you learn to spell more than 100 words!

Later you can spin the handle to help match the bumper car up upper and lower case letters. Then lastly twist the handle to spin the teacup to learn the sounds that each letter makes.

The games are simple enough that Miss Jade doesn’t need a lot of direct supervision. It is a game she can play on her own. Which is a must have for us right now as I’m often busy with our brand new baby. It gives Miss Jade a great way to be entertained and learn when I can’t be right there by her side.

LeapPad Platinum learning Game

Now we have a nice collection of LeapFrog devices in our home, starting as far back as the original Leapster! And even the LeapPad 2 and most recently the LeapFrog LeapTV! Now our kids always fight over who gets to play the new LeapPad. So I am very excited to have another LeapPad! And the new LeapPad Platinum is by far my favorite!

First, I absolutely love the Wi-Fi connection! Simply hook it up via Wi-Fi and you can complete the set up and registration. No need to hook it up to a laptop! I can’t even tell you how convenient that makes it. We are on the go, and want to download a new game? No problem! Just find wi-fi, log into the parental portal and you can select the games you want to add, purchase them (or redeem codes for them) and then they begin to download! Talk about easy!

And to save a parent’s sanity, the LeapPad Platinum doesn’t take regular batteries. That is right, they have finally advanced to having a rechargeable LeapPad! This mom is over the moon excited! We plug it in and charge it just like a regular tablet! No more need to stockpile batteries!

The other great features of the LeapPad Platinum include

  • 7″ hi-res multi-tough screen
  • Fast processor
  • a learning library that includes 1,000+ games that you can purchase/download
  • 8 GB memory which holds 40,000 photos or 100+ game apps
  • 2 cameras/video recorders
  • 10 apps
  • music player plus 10 songs
  • pet pad party
  • pet chat
  • photo fun ultra
  • 5 utility apps
  • one free app download that you can pick during set up.

The LeapPad Platinum is hte most durable LeadPad that LeapFrog has made to date. It has a shatter-safe screen ad wrap around bumper that protects against drops.

Plus the LeapPad Platinum offers great parental controls such as setting time limits and offering kid-safe web browsing!

And now it may be a little thing but I also love that the stylus is attached to the LeapPad Platinum! I can’t tell you how many styluses we have lost over the years with other “tablet” learning games! So the fact that it is attached is such a relief for this mom!

Miss Jade absolutely loves playing on tablets. But I feel a lot more confident turning her loose on the LeapPad Platinum than on her Dad’s tablet. Because i know she is in a safe learning environment, experiencing quality games that are aimed at helping her learn.

LeapFrog  LeapPad Platinum Imagicards

Along with the LeapPad Platinum came a collection of Imagicard games. These are something completely new to me. But also a game that Miss Jade took to right away.

The Imagicards combine digital and physical learning. And it brings the characters to life with a snap of a picture. The game features different cards that can be used as flash cards for learning. But take a photo in the game app on the LeapPad Platinum and the characters or learning cards come to live in the game!

The Imagicards feature 3 learning games like PAW patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and LeapFrog’s Letter Factory.

Jade is a huge fan of Letter Factory so that is the Imagicard set she plays with the most. She absolutely loves playing with Tad and Lilly and learning her letters. She loves snapping photos and seeing the letters come to live on the screen.

The games teach valuable skills such as

  • number recognition
  • counting
  • shapes
  • patterns
  • addition
  • subtraction
  • multiplication
  • division
  • fractions
  • number composition
  • Phonics
  • Spelling
  • Consonants
  • Word sounds
  • Sight words

All the games begin easy and progressively grow with your child, allowing them a long life span of learning.

Plus I love that the Imagicards have a tin box for the cards so you don’t have to worry about losing them.

But it gets better! All the cards are also digitally included in the game. So you can still play the full games while on the go!

This last week as I’ve been busy adjusting to having a new little baby at home and trying to find a new balance, I have been so grateful for these new LeapFrog Learning Games. They have offered valuable learning for Miss Jade, and hours of fun and entertainment.
