Thanks to Viva® Vantage Paper Towels for sponsoring today’s discussion about how to clean granite counters!
Have you seen our new kitchen? It is absolutely gorgeous! I am seriously in love with it! It is big. It is spacious. And best of all it’s mine!
When we walked into our home; and I saw the kitchen, I was sold on this house! And then we moved in. And then I learned you can’t clean granite with regular cleaners! Oh goodness no! So let me show you how to clean granite so it will keep that gorgeous luster shine for years to come!
How to Clean Granite
Granite isn’t like a regular counter. It’s a porous stone. If you use cleaners on it, it actually causes damage to your counters. That is the last thing you want after you spent so much money on that beautiful upgraded kitchen!
To clean granite most often you want to use just a wet rag or paper towel. Make sure the paper towel is sturdy and won’t shed or rip apart on you as you wipe. That’s why I use Viva® Vantage Paper Towels.
I can get them wet and wipe down my granite counters without it falling apart on me. The old cheap paper towels we used to use just don’t cut it. They are far too flimsy when they get wet. So we needed something something better. Viva® Vantage Paper Towels worked fantastic! And can be purchased at Walmart without breaking the bank.
This is how you should be cleaning your granite counters on a daily basis. No cleaner! No soapy dish rag. Definitely not a grease fighting spray. Just a wet paper towel or rag. Wipe it all up. And since you can’t use a cleaner for those extra messy messes; again a strong paper towel is essential to get it all cleaned up. Even on the toughest messy messes! Just a wet paper towel!
To protect your granite counters and keep the shine; once a week or once a month (depending on how rough you are on the counters) you will use a special granite cleaning spray. I use Black Diamond GP QT Granite Plus! Cleaner and Sealer. It’s not very expensive and works great and doesn’t leave an overpowering odor in the house.
Lightly Spray the cleaner and sealer spray on the granite counter.
With your trusty Viva® Vantage paper towel; wipe. Then wipe again. And then buff until dry.
That’s it. I’m telling you it’s pretty easy. As you are buffing you will see your granite counter start to shine. And again you need to use a quality paper towel like Viva® Vantage otherwise you will get nasty paper fuzz and balls left behind, which is the last thing you want on your gorgeous granite counters.
UPDATE: It’s been asked about disinfecting granite a few times. So I need to address that too. A well-sealed granite counter top is relatively impervious to bacteria. The special cleaner I use in the article also keeps the seal on the granite. However, if you feel you Must disinfect, mix together a 50:50 solution of water and 91% isopropyl alcohol. Spray onto the granite, allow to sit for 3-5 minutes, then rinse with water and dry with a clean microfiber cloth or the Viva Paper Towels. Always avoid bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. The harsher the chemical the more damage it may cause.
