Of all our possessions one of my most cherished items is a book my mom gave me. It’s not like any regular book. It’s actually a book she put together over the course of my life. You see, my Mom was very involved in Family History. And one year she gave me the gift of Family History that I have cherished ever since.
The gift of Family History
This book is actually a big binder. One year before I left home for college, it was a big Christmas Present that each of my siblings and I received. We each got our own. Inside it included our family history pedigree chart.
But then my mom took it a step farther. She divided up the rest of the binder by generations.
And then each generation had additional information about these people. My Grandparents and great grandparents. And it continued back through history generation by generation.
When available the book includes
- Photos of my ancestors
- Memories of my Ancestors as written by others
- Personal History of my ancestors
- Religious documents
I’ve been able to learn about grandparents that I never knew. I’ve been able to discover what countries our family descends from.
This was a very labor-intensive gift of love that my mother created. I remember watching her spends hours upon hours for years laying the foundation of these gifts for each of my 8 siblings and then myself.
And she continued diligently adding to these books for us through her entire life until the Alzheimer’s became too great that she couldn’t continue researching our family history.
Whenever she found a new ancestor or more information on an ancestor we already had in our book, she would create a new page and send it to us to add into our book.
This Family History Binder is one I keep close to my heart. Because it contains our Family History. It contains so much more than just names on a paper.
And it is also a great gift from my Mother that I hold so close to my heart since she passed away.
Family History can bring such a great sense of self. Knowing where you came from. And developing an appreciation for your ancestors.
