Welcome to Wordless Wednesday!
Last week we took a family trip to the Grand Tetons! We did a little nature hike for the kids around Jenny's Lake pointing out the different plants in our area that are actually edible. I thought I'd share with you what we found!
Although it is fun to know which plants are edible, remember if you are in a National Park, picking and eating plants is illegal.
Huckleberries! Oh these make the Best syrup and Jam!
Blue Bell Flowers! You can eat the actual flower petals!
Honeysuckle flower! You pluck the flower off, and suck the Nector out of it. Quite sweet!
As mentioned before, picking these plants inside a National forest is a BIG "no no". But you can find them all over the Rocky mountains! These are all quite common plants where I grew up in Wyoming and where we go camping every where. They are quite fun to "taste".
UPDATE: After searching, I discovered that the law against picking plants in State and National parks actually is different based on the State you are in. Each state has it's own laws, so be sure to check for that state before you pick any plants. There are laws against removing a plant, rock, geological find, etc from National and State parks, but as far as eating edible plants, it varies based on the state you are visiting. Although all National parks urge visitors to NOT pick flowers simple for the idea that they'd like them to remain so everyone can enjoy them. Remember that age old, "if everyone picked a flower, then there won't be any left for others to enjoy" comment your school teachers used to tell you on school field trips? It's basically the same idea.
And where as, even if it is against the law in your state, it's not very frequently that offenders are prosecuted, especially if it's a child that picks a plant unknowningly.
Don't forget to link up your own Wordless Wednesday post, and hop around to all the others listed. We love comments too; so feel free to leave us a note! I do read them!

Okay think me weird, but I didn't think huckleberries were for real. How about that. Learn something new every day. Have a good one.
