Dog Treats, How to pick the best Dog treats for your best friend. Pet care 101.

A while ago I introduced Odin to our followers on Facebook. Now I am introducing Odin to all those who read JadeLouise Designs. Odin joined our family just a few months ago. He is a super loving chocolate lab and pitbull mix. And boy is he fun! We just adore Odin. He captured our hearts right away. It has been a fun few months learning a lot about dogs and proper dog care. And most important selecting the right dog food and dog treats. We only want the best for Odin. So we have done a lot of reading and learned some very key things to look for when selecting the best dog treats.

How to select the best dog treats.

When it comes to picking out the best dog treats for your best friend, you really only need to look out for a few key things.

  1. No Corn, wheat & soy
  2. Meat #1
  3. Fruits and Veggies included

First let’s talk about corn, wheat and soy. You will find in many dog foods and dog treats that corn or some form of wheat is the #1 ingredient. Some argue that this is because of some nutritional value. But that myth has been debunked. Corn, grains and soy are not needed in a dogs diet. Dogs are meat eaters. Corn is hard to digest. And sometimes can even cause allergies in pets. It is merely used because it is cheap. It is a lot cheaper than using meat as the main ingredient. Corn in dog treats is something to really look out for.

So for us, the first thing we do is look at the ingredients of the dog treats. We always check to make sure they don’t have corn, wheat or soy. Instead Meat should be the first ingredient. It doesn’t really matter the flavor so long as it is real meat. As I said before, dogs are meat eaters. Yes they also eat fruits and veggies, but meat is crucial for their development and growth.

Lastly, fruit and vegetables are great dog treat fillers. So long as they are quality fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables can actually help to prolong a dogs life and improve their quality of life. Fruits and vegetables can aid dogs’ nutrition. They are full of nutrition and the antioxidants can actually help to prevent cancer in some cases!

So it stands to reason that the best dog treats are those that do not contain corn, wheat and soy. But do contain meats, fruit and vegetables.

Enjoying Dogswell dog treats

So we have been hunting for quality dog treats that meet all the criteria and we have found one! Recently we tried out some of the Dogswell Dog treats jerky bars. They have zero Corn, wheat and soy. The #1 ingredient is meat. And they contain nutrient rich fruits and vegetables! They have a variety of different flavors that allow you to pick and choose what your dog loves most.

They also have dog treats that are specialized for certain health concerns or ailments. Such as ensuring healthy hips, healthy hearts or just overall improved health. The jerky bars are different than traditional dog treats. These are not the kind of dog treats you use when you are training your dog. They are bigger and actual bars. They are thick and full of fruit and vegetables. And they take a bit of time to eat. Not just gone in one gulp.

The Dogswell jerky bar dog treats are low glycemic, have added vitamins and zinc, and used with real food ingredients. These are much more for a special occasion, or to be added in a routine, or just because you love your dog and want to give him something special. Not for reward training. We often give Odin a jerky bar dog treat or two after an afternoon of playing outside with us. Just as a treat and a little snack to tide him over until dinner time. He is still a growing pup of only 10 months old after all.

This is such great info. We are very picky about the treats we feed our dogs. We have a small maltipoo and just rescued a Boxer/Pitt mix who is 8 weeks old and just cute as a bug. By the way, Odin is just adorable! He looks like so much fun.
