How many times do you get frustrated with your current wireless plan? I have been quite frustrated with mine for a while. But because of my contract with the company, I can’t change it at all. I can’t change phones. I can’t change data plans. I’m stuck. I hate that feeling. So I figured it was time to take a look at a cheap wireless plan that didn’t have any contracts. So if you are on the hunt for options, join me on my journey! I’m going to show you what I discovered about the Walmart Family Mobile plan and what makes it a great choice when looking for the best unlimited plans for your family.
Why I looked into Walmart Family Mobile Plan
So let me tell you about our Wireless plans available in my area. Most basic plans all come with a 2 year contract now. Two Years! I don’t know about you, but I can’t guarantee I will be happy with the same plan in one year, let alone for two years! This is a fast passed life. Things change so much. Just since last September, our blog has more than tripled in size, and I’m doing a lot more business contacts, and need access to a more reliable phone with data options. These are things not really available to me on my current phone. That’s just since September! That is only 8 months! So just think how much things could change in two years. Yeah, the contracts have to go!
I got an LG Optimus phone on my last contract update with our provider. It was a big upgrade for me at the time. Now this was over a year ago. But like I said; things change fast. It fit my needs at that time. But since September it no longer fits my needs. I need something with faster connections. I need better photo options. I need a phone that can handle more than 5 apps downloaded without it running out of space and refusing to send a text to my Husband because there isn’t enough room on the phone.
Yes, that happens frequently! It says, “unable to send text. Please delete apps to free space before texting can resume”. Really? I need all the apps I’ve downloaded. There aren’t very many. Less than 10! And I can’t uninstall the huge app files that came standard on the phone. It doesn’t give me that option! Even though I don’t want them. So I’m always out of space and I have to frequently delete apps that I use all the time, just so I can text.
But since I am in a contract I can’t even change my phone without huge fees in the hundreds of dollars range. (Insert big stinky face icon here. Maybe some tongues sticking out. Guestures too. Oh, but keep them family friendly. I have a reputation to uphold). So I hate my phone. What else goes wrong with it?
I frequently miss calls. Not because I can’t get to my phone on time. But because the stupid thing doesn’t actually ring. I will check my phone every now and then and find out I have missed calls. How can I have missed calls? It didn’t ring? I have it set to ring and vibrate at the same time. I carry it on my hip at all times. So how did I miss it? Volume is at full blast. This phone has my husband convinced I hate talking to him. So not true! It just doesn’t like to ring for him. Which is sad. Because I have the best ringtone for him. “The Dark side of the force is calling you…” in Darth Vader’s voice, complete with breathing. Seriously; it is awesome!
I could keep going on and on about how I hate my phone. But I think you get the message. Stupid phone. Stupid contract. Oh, but let’s talk price.
Most family mobile plans in our area start at $50 or more. And that is for one phone. With limited minutes and data usage. If you go over your usage, you get massive expensive fees. Another service plan in our area offers a phone line for $70 for unlimited minutes and texting. Which is great. But only 300 MB of data. 300MB? Dang! I would use that up within a day or two! I use a lot of data and texting. Screw the minutes (pardon my language).
I don’t like to talk on phones. But I’m a texting and data using fiend! I need unlimited texting and data something fierce. Most contract plans don’t offer unlimited data. And when they do; it is quite expensive.
I found one company that offers unlimited text, talk, and data. But the restriction is you have to be using it on one of their towers. If you get pinged off another tower you get extra charges. So it’s not good for traveling. And those plans start at $109 for one phone! Hello! Not for me. That is far too pricey.
You can see the conundrum.
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
Do you have the same irritations?
So I went to Walmart to find new options. And I was really liking what I saw from the Walmart Family mobile plan.
How the Walmart Family Mobile Plan works
The Walmart family mobile plan is pretty sweet. It is $40 a month for unlimited talk, text and data on the first line. You can add additional lines on your family plan for only $35 each. Already you are saving a lot of money! And even better there are no contracts! So say you just needed a phone for a few months. No problem. You pay per month. You can cancel your service at any time without fees and penalties!
Or say, your teenager has a phone. And they really push the boundaries. So you want to take their phone privileges away. No problem. You don’t have to keep paying for a phone that isn’t getting used. Just cancel that line until they can earn it back. Then you can reactivate that line. I’m really liking this idea. I’m sure when my boys get old enough for cell phones, this may be an issue if they haven’t learned how to curb the sass and attitude when talking to the parents by then.
If you don’t already have a phone compatible with the system, you can buy one fairly inexpensive right there in the store. They have quite the selection. If you happen to already have one of the phones, you don’t have to worry about buying a new one. You can take it with you. Check out my Google+ album for a picture of the different phones that you can use on the system.
I got a Samsung Galaxy III. And let me just say it is so awesome! I love this phone. It works so much better than my old LG phone. And it doesn’t overload on space. I can download all the apps I want and it still works! I can still text! And it has so many amazing features! Seriously this phone rocks! And it is so thin! It is half the thickness of my old phone. It has a bigger screen too. I really like that. It fits in my pocket a lot easier and isn’t so bulky. Even though it is a bigger surface area. Because it is so thin, it fits better.
Plus far better picture, and a lot easier texting ability. And the voice option (Android version of Siri) works a lot better on the Samsung phone! It only misses a word now and then. Unlike on my LG it would come up with something crazy that was not even close to what I would say.
And the photos! Oh my goodness! The Samsung Galaxy III takes a lot better photos! I love it! This is really going to rock come summer! I don’t always have my camera on me to capture moments of the kids. But I do have my cell phone on me! So I often rely on it to get the pictures. The LG often blurs a lot of the photos. And to top it off; it has such a huge delay! I push the button and about 10 seconds later it finally takes the picture. No joke. I end up missing a lot of great moments due to the delay.
The Samsung Galaxy III snaps a lot faster. Plus it has this awesome mode called Smile Shot, that automatically takes the picture when the subject smiles. Very cool. It has a lot of other camera settings and features to get a lot of great shots. I’m still playing with them all to learn how to use them best. But it has me quite excited for this summer.
We have a lot of upcoming events I want to be prepared for. Like school plays, camping trips, family vacations, and just every day outdoor summer play. These are moments I don’t want to miss and the new upgraded camera feature is really going to help with that.
But back to the new Walmart Family Mobile Plan. I get sidetracked easily when you get me talking about the Samsung Galaxy III. It is just such an amazing upgrade in phone quality compared to my LG. I’ll try not to get distracted again.
To begin you need to buy one of these Starter kits. It will have the new SIM card for your phone and activation codes. It is only $25. How is that for a start up fee/activation fee? The most affordable activation fee I’ve seen yet! Forget the $100 activation fees the contract wireless plans charge.
And it is really easy to set up too! You can get it set up there in the store if you want. But you can also just buy the kit and take it home and set it up online at home or on the phone. Thankfully. Because when I asked our Walmart Sales associate about the activation; she was completely clueless and knew less than I did just by reading the signs in the store. I just bought my kit and took it home to do the set up. The kit comes with all you need to do the activation. And the instructions are super easy to follow!
You will take the SIM card from the package and add it into the SIM slot in the back of your phone. You will need to use the phone option or the internet to set it up before your phone will work, obviously. But I had my phone activated within just a few short minutes. It was really fast. And super easy.
Then I just created my online account where I can check my data usage and such. I can actually monitor my usage from my Online account management and information! How cool is that?
So far, I’ve been using my new Walmart Family mobile plan for just a few days. But so far I’ve really liked it. I love the new phone. I love the no contracts. I love how easy it was to set up. And I love how easy it is to access my account and see everything that is happening on it.
How does it fair over time? Well stick around. I will be back at the end of my first month to tell you all about it. Come June I will be able to tell you how the end of the month works, and how the service compares to my old cell phone plan. I’m quite excited to try this out!
