If you visited my house, it would become apparent that I’m a book-aholic. This last move was atrocious because of how many boxes of books we have. I just love books! I love reading. I love escaping to a new reality, traveling a new adventure, or visiting new locations through the books. And I’m working hard to help my kids develop a love for reading too!

But I’m also a busy mom. I work at home. I have a child with developmental delays that takes a bit more attention than her brothers require. We have a house and yard to take care of. Groceries to buy, food to prepare. And of course, I want to spend time with the kids. So sometimes reading takes a back seat. I definitely don’t get to read as much as I would like.

A great solution is Audiobooks. My Mother-in-law uses audiobooks all the time because she also doesn’t have time to just sit and read. But she loves books and loves stories just as much as I! But I’m also impatient. Our local library has books on CD. But we no longer have a tape player, or a CD player. We are all digital now. Not to mention I’m far too impatient to wait for the books I want to become available from the library. There are usually very long wait lines for those books.

We’ve tried all kinds of books. Letting him pick out his own books. Even his most obsessed topic STAR WARS wasn’t enough to pull him into a chapter book!

So I’m trying  a new tactic. I’m hoping if we can show him the amazing world of stories from a chapter book through an audiobook, that he might finally get the courage to dive into a chapter book! Knowing that it’s not something to be scared of; but relished.

Not to mention audiobooks really helped pass the time on our last travel trip! 4 hours of driving through canyons with no radio signal. Yeah; the audiobooks were a lifesaver! The 9 year old absolutely loved listening to the story! So this may just work!

You can download Audible audiobooks onto a smartphone or tablet and listen to them at home or on the go. They are quite portable; unlike the old book on CD. And you don’t have to worry about little kids getting a hold of the discs and smudging them with finger prints or breaking them. Yes, digital is definitely the way to go!

Not to mention; collecting audiobooks for the kids is a great way to help me whittle down this huge collection of books! Cause we don’t have much more room for books in this house! All that is just a QUARTER of the books we have stashed here.
