Now I’m not as young as I used to be. I can no longer get away with sleeping on the hard ground. Nor can I get away with one of those simple camping pads. It just doesn’t give me enough comfort for a good nights sleep. I need a quality camping air mattress. I have spent the last four months looking for a good camping air mattress. I searched for reviews. I looked up different features and sizes. And when it all came down to the wire, the Insta-Bed Stow-n-go queen-size bed with Insta I Pump was the perfect camping air mattress.
How to pick out a quality camping air mattress
One of my favorite things to look forward to each year is our family camping trip! It is a full week in the mountains of Wyoming with no outside communication. That’s right, no electricity, no cabins, no cell phone and no internet! It is absolutely amazing! It is fantastic to really unplug and relax and enjoy family!
We go with a large family gathering. Such as my Aunts, Uncles, cousins, some of my sibblings, and of course all the kids! It is usually quite a big event for us all. But it is not to be mistaken for a Family reunion. No way. This family camp is sacred and is all about camping, relaxing, playing games and spending time with family and good food. So obviously you want to make sure you have a good nights sleep so you can enjoy all the fun stuff!
When looking for a quality camping air mattress I wanted something with the right size. Since Miss Jade and I would be sharing the bed, I wanted something bigger so a Queen is perfect, because then it is big enough for me to share with the Husband when he finishes college and will be able to join us on the next camping trip.
I also look for the nice Sueded top. All of our sleeping bags have that silky fabric on the outside. So seriously if it doesn’t have the Sued fabric on top, the sleeping bags just slide right off. What’s the point in that?
I also look for the option of having the pump built into the air mattress. Seriously, who wants to try to keep track of a big bulky air pump for your air mattress? Been there. Done that. It’s a pain in the rear end! I can’t tell you how many times we have lost that stupid air pump! I want an air mattress that can house the air pump inside so I know the air pump is right there!
Another bonus is when the air pump can be flipped and actually deflate the air mattress too! This makes for super easy pack up. Since I don’t have to wait for the air to come out of the mattress. And I also don’t have to roll all over the mattress trying to push the air out myself before I can fold it up and pack it up.
Insta-Bed offers the best selection for a Camping air mattress
My first choice of air mattress was the Queen raised insta-bed™ with built-in rechargeable pump. But it was sold out at the time. Ok, so plan B. Instead this year we went with the Insta-Bed Stow-n-go queen-size bed with Insta I Pump. It has all of the key features I mentioned I was looking for in the best camping air mattress! And then some!
The Insta-Bed Stow-n-go queen-size bed with Insta I Pump is perfect for RVs, sleepovers or for anyone on the go! And obviously for camping too! This airbed provides a great night’s sleep in an all-in-one, portable package. And it has a very powerful built-in, 4D battery powered pump inflates the mattress in seconds.
- Deflates quickly
- Easily fits back into attached duffel
- Sueded top helps to keep the bedding on
- 42 circular coils give support for a comfortable night’s sleep
- The comfort adjust pump allows for adjustment of desired firmness throughout the night
- Welded construction creates airtight seal on all seams
- Inflating time: 1 minute, 50 seconds
- Deflating time: 2 minutes
- Controller: Internal battery pump
- Dimensions: 9 inches high x 60 inches wide x 78 inches long
The Insta-Bed stow-n-go air mattress wasn’t my first choice. I really liked the idea of the raised bed from my first choice. But having this air mattress closer to the ground ended up being a good thing. See I had my toddler sharing the bed with me. And she did happen to roll right off the mattress a few times this week. She didn’t even hardly notice she had rolled off the bed because it was closer to the ground. Now had I been using the raised air mattress, that would have been a rather nasty drop for her.
Plus with the design of my tent, I don’t think the raised bed would have fit very well. So getting the smaller air mattress was actually a blessing in disguise.
The Insta-bed air mattress was super easy to set up. I loved how in less than 2 minutes I had our air mattress inflated and ready to go. So easy. The pump really is powerful.
The only negative I have about the air pump is that it takes 4 D batteries. Which it’s really a torn negative. I love the idea of a rechargeable battery. One I can charge up before we go camping and not have to keep buying new batteries. But then what happens when the battery gets used up in the middle of the camp? We don’t have electricity to recharge it! So really the 4 D Batteries are actually a good thing for longer camping trips. Because then if they run out I can simply replace them and keep my airbed inflated to the perfect level.
One thing to keep in mind with these air mattress beds, is that the fabric will stretch the first while of use. It’s just the natural way of an air mattress. The pressure of the air inside lets the fabric stretch. So you may come back to bed that night and think you have sprung a leak. But really that’s not the case. Just the brand new fabric getting it’s first stretching. It just takes time for it to equal out. So each night I just had to do a quick pump up of air back up to my level of preference.
The good news is that by the end of the week, I was putting in a lot less air each night than I was at the beginning of the week. So again, it reaffirmed to me that I didn’t have a leak in my mattress. Just the fabric was stretching and now was settling in. But it doesn’t stretch so much that you are on the floor by the next morning. It takes more time than that. I always woke up with a well filled mattress.
Now most importantly, comfort. How comfortable was the Insta-bed camping air mattress? I can honestly say after trying out multiple air mattresses the last few years, the Insta-bed air mattress is one of the most comfortable air mattresses I have ever used. Is it as comfortable as my bed at home? No. Not even close. I have a lot of extra padding on that bed. But as far as air mattresses go, this is one of the best for comfort and features I’ve used yet. It will definitely be my go to camping air mattress!
When it came time to pack up, it was super easy to deflate the mattress. Just take the pump out. This lets a lot of the air escape naturally. Then you turn the air pump around and now is sucks all the air out of the mattress in less than 2 minutes!
An added bonus is that I can actually get the mattress back into the carry bag! Which is awesome because it has super easy to use handles that makes carrying it around a lot easier.
