Why is it that every time I turn around it seems as though my kids have grown 3 inches? Do you have the same problem? It seems as though I am constantly having to buy new pants because the pants I bought them a month ago now look like pedal pushers from the 50’s. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could make some simple clothing alterations to lengthen pants and allow your kids a few extra months of wear before you have to buy the next size up? How much money do you think you could save? What if I was to tell you there is a way to lengthen pants and all without sewing a single thread! It’s true! And I’m going to show you step by step how you can make simple clothing alterations to lengthen pants; all without a single stitch. It’s all thanks to Belle Bottoms!
Can you create clothing alterations without sewing?
Normally you can’t lengthen pants as they merely have a very tiny hem. Jeans especially. There isn’t any fabric left to add length. Sure you can sew on a longer cuff, but honestly I can’t sew! I don’t even own an sewing machine. I can do a few stitches here and there to mend a small hole or fix a button, but that’s about as far as my sewing skills go. I wanted to find a method that anyone could use to lengthen pants to help your back to school shopping budget stretch just a little further! And I found just that method with Belle Bottoms!
Belle Bottoms are just one of many products from The Buti-Bag Co, a mom invented company aimed at creating funky and fashionable accessories for Mom, kids and babies! This mom definitely had moms like me in mind when she created the Belle Bottoms! They are very simple to use, fashionable and don’t require sewing!
The Belle Bottoms come in two sizes, small and large. Each are generously sized so you can always get the perfect fit for your pants. The small is measured for children’s pants up to 14 inches in circumference (generally from 0-6 years in straight-leg styles). The Large accommodates pant legs up to 22 inches around (most straight-leg pants).
Best of all they aren’t just for girls! They have lots of different styles and patterns for both girls and boys! They have a flat and ruffle style. They can be used for decoration or to lengthen.
They are easy to apply and turn simple jeans that are too short into fashionable pants that everyone will be drooling over! But best of all for me they allow me to keep Jade in pants that actually fit her around the waist! She’s such a tall skinny girl, that the next size up pants that would actually be long enough for her are double her waist size. Belts can only do so much. So she’s been staying in the size that fits her waist but they are way too short. The Belle Bottoms have completely eliminated this problem for us! So let me show you just how amazing they are and how simple it is to do your own clothing alterations.
Clothing Alterations, How to lengthen pants hem without sewing.
You want to gather all your supplies and have them right at your finger tips. You will need:
- Belle bottoms
- flat iron safe surface to work on.
The Belle Bottoms comes with two strips of cuff fabric and detailed instructions with photos. Now when you get your own Belle Bottoms, be sure you read through the instructions from beginning to end to make sure you have all the ins and outs down. Don’t just take my instructions and call it good. Since applying these Belle Bottoms are permanent you want to be sure you know exactly what you are doing and don’t have any questions left. But once you know what to do, they are super easy to apply and don’t take much time at all.
You will need to remove the hem of the pants. This helps the Belle Bottoms lay flat and not have lumps in the cuffs of the pants. Just snip as straight as you can right above the hem of the pants. Now you are ready to move on.
You will notice the Belle Bottoms have 3 sides with a paper tape, 2 long and one short. Remove the paper tape from the short (height) end. Now wrap the Belle Bottoms fabric around the cuff of your pants. Adjusting for the perfect length that you want for the pants. Also you are adjusting to make the perfect width. Be sure to keep the Belle Bottoms snug and inline with the pants hem or you will end up with wrinkles.
Now you will fuse the cuff into a circle using an iron. This heats up the adhesive glue on the cuff and allows it to fuse together. Let it sit for one minute to allow the adhesive to cool and form a strong bond. The instructions have more detailed information about fusing, so be sure to read them!
Mark with a pencil on the pants exactly where you had them to ensure you can replace the cuff at the same location. Remove the cuff and turn inside out and trim off the extra fabric. You will end up with a simple circular cuff.
Replace the cuff back onto the leg of the pants making sure the SURGED edge of the pants is at the bottom away from the pants. The surged edge will be tucked under and fused to make the hem of the pants. You will want to be sure the edges line up with the pencil markings you made on the pants. Also be sure that the cuff is level. You will want to line the seam of the cuff up with the outside seem of your jeans so that the two seems form a straight line.
Then again you will fuse the cuff, but this time instead of fusing the cuff to itself you are fusing it to the hem of your pants.
The instructions have you complete the process entirely for the first cuff and then move onto doing the second cuff. But I found that at this point it was easier for me to then do the second cuff, so I could measure and compare to ensure I was getting both cuffs completely even with each other before I completed the hem of the cuffs. So at this point I repeated all the above steps for the second cuff.
Next you will turn your pants inside out so you can complete the hem of the cuff.
Remove the paper tape and fold the hem up. Ensure all of the adhesive glue is on the jeans. You can adjust the length of the cuff accordingly to find the perfect length of the pants for your child. Make sure the cuffs on both legs are level with each other and ensure that the jean fabric is flat. Jade’s pants had a slight flair in them so I had a little extra fussing with the fabric to make it lay flat, but as long as the flair isn’t too large it will still work well.
Once the cuff is folded onto the jeans and they are level then you merely fuse to the pants. Be sure to turn the pants over and fuse both sides. Also I found it was helpful to rotate the leg and lay the seems flat and fuse them to ensure that the entire circumference of the Belle Bottoms are secured onto the pants.
Allow the adhesive glue to cool and then you can turn your pants right side out again and Ta-Da! You are done!
You have now just done your first clothing alteration without sewing a single stitch!
The Belle Bottoms have added flair, style, and length to my baby girls favorite pants! I mean seriously how cute are those pants!? Every time I see her wearing them I just get all smiles and say, “Oh those are so cute!”
I love the Belle Bottoms because they are functional, fit a need I had and they are still a lot of fun and full of fashion! Even after wearing and playing the Belle Bottom cuffs are still secure on Jade’s pants. For cleaning care you can simply wash and dry them in your home machines or dry clean them. Quite simple. As long as you don’t expose the pants to too much heat the adhesive glue should remain intact for a long time.
Now I’m one that hates to waist fabric. I was raised on the old saying, “Waste not, Want not”. We don’t throw scraps away. So I made Jade a fashionable fabric hair bow to match with the left over fabric from the Belle Bottoms, take a look!
